Every shooter wants
to hit more targets or birds without spending countless hours practicing. Some
spend weeks on the range or in the field being frustrated with results.
The issue in most cases is not the lack of talent or ability, but the
combination of solid gun handling skills combined with proper gun fit.
For years, people went to the local golf shop and tried one or two sets
of clubs usually the brand used by their favorite professional, thought they
felt ok, and made the $600 or more purchase, only to find that after the
first week wore off they were still the same golfer they were before that
purchase. So next, we take a couple of lessons... and we hear those dreadful
words from the instructor," Those clubs are nice, however, they are not right
for YOUR swing"..
It is the same in shooting. There are VERY few professionals in any discipline
that have an "off the rack" gun and shoot it at the top of the game. There are
as well none who purchased a gun before they were analyzed by a coach or gun
maker to obtain the proper fit.
The key to obtaining maximum potential for shooting is the following:
-
Instruction
-
Allow the instructor to teach the proper technique
-
Give yourself time to absorb the technique and practice it
-
Gun Selection and fitting
-
Using the advice of a gun maker and the instructor to choose the gun that is
right for your needs
-
Allow the gun maker AND the instructor to fit you not only for where your for
is now but also to where it will be.
-
Practice
-
Now you have the ability to improve using the proper technique with the gun
that is right for you
Now that the gun is custom for you and your game, you and your
instructor can advance your skills instead of fighting the uphill battle
between gun fit and frustration.
Following the above criteria, Josh spends the majority of the first lesson
explaining how to get into the proper shooting position for your game,
consisting of foot position, gun placement into the shoulder and face, grip,
how to set a consistent balance, and finally gun hold positions as well as eye
placement. Once these have been established and you are comfortable with them,
the remainder is spent on the range applying these techniques.
Josh is known for taking as much on range time as he is working off the range
perfecting technique. There will be sessions like 5 shots then 2 to 3 practice
mounts to get the form back, then 5 to 10 more shots and so on. It is
imperative that the form is understood as that is the base on which a solid
shooter is built. Once this is achieved, the progression with be gradual rather
than the peaks and valleys that can occur when sloppy.
As you progress on to advanced lessons, Josh will cover issues concerning eye
positions as they relate to timing as well as hold points that are used to
adjust timing and movement to the target. He will cover aspects of the mental
side of shooting, ranging from recreational sports all the way to the elite
athlete levels, depending on your needs.
To conclude your experience, Josh will help you layout a training program
specific to your goals and ambitions. These can range from 1 day a week
practice programs all the way to a full time training schedule that will
include physical training, stretching and warm up, off range training
techniques, on range training regimen with specific daily and round to round
objectives. It will include practice days to prepare for tournaments, including
exercises to be applied that help adapt to different facilities and
environments, and even on site competition instruction, preparation, and
guidance.
